Coach’s reason for honor: “DJ is a great leader for us both on the field and off and his teammates recognized this, voting him captain,” coach Rusty Van Wetzinga said. “He has been a very consistent performer for us throughout the year, both offensively and defensively.”

Athlete’s reaction: “I’m kind of surprised because it came out of nowhere.”

Goals: “Probably go to a Division III college and major in physical education and play football.”
