Favorite book or movie and why?

My favorite books and movies happen to be the same! I grew up reading the Lord of the Rings and they became my favorite movies, as well.

How do you like to spend your weekends?

Cacio e Pepe, a Roman dish, is one of Dr. Hashmi’s favorite pastas to make at home.

I like to spend time with my family and friends. We watch movies and TV shows, play board games, and spend time outdoors as much as possible. My wife and I love to take weekend trips up to Chicago when the weather is nice, as well.

What are your interests and activities outside of work?

I have recently started learning to cook. It’s relaxing, but it also provides a great challenge as I have been learning to make more complex recipes. I would eventually love to get some formal instruction, so I can take my cooking to the next level.

What is your favorite dish to cook?

I love making homemade pasta. I’ve been doing it for about a year or two. My wife and I are total foodies. Sharing a great meal together, especially when we travel, is one of our favorite things to do. It’s all about the food.

Cooking together is a great way to unwind for Dr. Hashmi and his wife Sofia.

Where would you most like to travel, but have never been?

I have always wanted to go to Spain. There is such a rich history there and between the culture, food, and architecture it would make for a great trip. I am also a big soccer fan, so it would be wonderful for that, too.

Name one person you would like to meet and why?

It would have to be Martin Luther King Jr. He faced unprecedented challenges and stayed motivated, despite several setbacks and pushback. He was truly an inspiration.

What do you like best about practicing medicine?

For me, it is all about the patients. Hearing their stories and helping them live their lives to fullest gives me a great sense of purpose.

What inspires you most about your patients?

I love interacting with particularly motivated patients and seeing their journey. So many of them want to be more active and live fuller lives. Being a part of that process of improvement and watching many of them succeed in achieving their goals is wonderful.

If there is one piece of advice you wish your patients would take to heart, what would it be?

Being open and honest with your doctor is the best way for us to have a meaningful relationship. It allows us to understand your problem better, but also gives us a clear understanding of who you are and how we can help you to achieve your goals.
