Carpal tunnel surgery, also referred to as carpal tunnel release, is performed with the goal of relieving compression on the hand’s median nerve by cutting the ligament that serves as the roof of the carpal tunnel – the narrow passageway that houses the median nerve. There are two surgical approaches that may be taken depending on the extent of the compression:

  • Endoscopic carpal tunnel release: In this minimally invasive surgery, an endoscope, a thin instrument with a tiny camera on the end, is used to view inside the hand and wrist. A specially designed knife is then used to “release” the carpal ligament and relieve nerve compression.
  • Open carpal tunnel release: During open surgery, the surgeon makes a small incision in the palm to view the inside of the hand and relieve nerve compression by releasing the carpal ligament.

No matter which form of carpal tunnel surgery is best for your individual case, rest assured your ORA doctor will provide compassionate, personalized care during every step of the treatment and recovery process. It is our goal to provide a positive medical and personal experience.
