Hip arthroscopy surgery is a minimally invasive procedure that serves as both a diagnostic tool and a treatment option for a wide range of hip conditions. If you’re struggling with persistent hip pain that hasn’t improved with nonsurgical treatments, hip arthroscopy may be the solution you’ve been searching for.
Hip arthroscopy is a state-of-the-art surgical procedure that allows your orthopedic surgeon to view and treat the inside of your hip joint without making large incisions. Using an arthroscope—a thin, pencil-like instrument equipped with a small video camera—your surgeon can see detailed, live images of your hip joint on a monitor in the operating room. This technology enables precise diagnosis and targeted treatment of hip problems, often resulting in less post-operative pain, smaller scars, and a faster recovery compared to traditional open surgery.

During the procedure, the surgeon inserts the arthroscope and specialized instruments through small incisions around the hip. These tools allow for the repair or removal of damaged cartilage, bone spurs, loose bodies, and other sources of pain or limited mobility. Most patients go home the same day and begin their recovery with a personalized rehabilitation plan.
Hip arthroscopy is used to diagnose and treat a variety of hip conditions, including:
Hip arthroscopy is generally recommended for younger, active adults and athletes who have not found relief from conservative treatments such as physical therapy, medications, or injections. You may be a candidate if:
Before your procedure, you will meet with your surgeon and anesthesia team to discuss the best anesthesia option for you. On the day of surgery, your leg will be gently placed in traction to create space within the hip joint for the arthroscope and instruments.
The surgeon will make one or more small incisions around the hip, insert the arthroscope, and use the live video feed to guide the procedure. Specialized tools are used to repair torn cartilage, remove bone spurs, or clean out loose bodies. Once the necessary repairs are complete, the incisions are closed and a dressing is applied.
Recovery from hip arthroscopy is typically faster and less painful than traditional open surgery. Most patients use crutches for one to two weeks after the procedure and begin physical therapy within days to restore strength and mobility.
You can expect to return to desk work or school within a week or two, while more physically demanding activities may require additional time. Full recovery and return to sports or strenuous exercise usually take three to six months.
Hip arthroscopy offers several advantages over traditional open surgery, including:
